Requirements to Teach English in Indonesia

Before coming to Indonesia, we encourage you to prepare documents needed to work here. Here are the requirements you need to fulfill:

1. Valid Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 18 months from your planned arrival date. This is important because the work visa and residence permit application process requires a long passport validity period.

Make sure your passport has at least two blank pages for visa stamps and immigration records.

2. Bachelor’s Degree

A Bachelor’s degree in any field is a mandatory requirement to obtain a legal work permit in Indonesia. While the degree does not always have to be in education or English, having a background in Education, English, Linguistics, or related fields will significantly improve your chances of getting hired and may lead to better salary offers.

Certified copies and official transcripts may be requested during the visa application process.

3. Recognized Teaching Certificate

A recognized English teaching certificate such as TEFL, TESOL, DELTA, CELTA, or equivalent is highly recommended and often required by schools. This certificate shows that you have the proper training to teach English effectively in a classroom setting.

For candidates without prior teaching experience, having a teaching certificate greatly increases employability and credibility.

5. Work Visa and Residence Permit (KITAS)

All foreign teachers must have a legal work visa and residence permit (KITAS) sponsored by their employer. The school or institution will usually assist with this process.

This permit allows you to live and work legally in Indonesia. Teaching without proper documentation is illegal and can lead to fines, deportation, or blacklisting.

6. Medical Check Up

A basic medical examination is required as part of the visa process. This ensures that you are fit to work and live in Indonesia. The medical check typically includes:

  • General health screening
  • Blood test
  • Chest X-ray

Some schools may request this before arrival, while others arrange it after you arrive in Indonesia.

How Much Foreigner Teacher Salary in Indonesia?

The salary for foreign English teachers in Indonesia varies depending on school type, location, qualifications, and teaching experience.

While Indonesia may not offer the highest salaries in Asia, its low cost of living allows teachers to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle.

From our discover in the communities, the salary is ranging from USD 600 – USD 3000+. With salary like that, you can afford comfortable lifestyle here.
